Problems with sperm production
When there is a sperm disorder we have:
- Azoospermia, no sperm is produced,
- Oligospermia, where little sperm is produced,
- Teratospermia, where sperm with abnormal morphology is produced
Sometimes, sperm is of poor quality or die before it reaches the egg. In rare cases, a genetic disease such as cystic fibrosis or a chromosomal abnormality may cause male infertility.
Approximately one in three cases of male infertility is caused by blockages or absence of the seminal ducts carrying the sperm due to injury, inflammation or surgery (vasectomy).
Factors that negatively affect the quality of the semen
- smoking,
- excessive alcohol consumption,
- Drug use,
- increased weight,
- injuries,
- frequent exposure to excessive heat (people working at high temperatures or using sauna regularly)
- working in confined spaces (e.g.lorry drivers)
- inflammation (prostatitis, epididymitis)
- surgery for another reason
